A still life is not only a great way for an artist to practice the basics of painting but also a study on the objects themselves. The items chosen for this still life were not simply chosen because they had interesting shapes and colors which provided education or entertainment through painting, but because they carry a common theme.
Beyond this, no matter if the objects were chosen deliberately or not, as the artist works on the still life they contemplate the objects as individual items. They see the light and shadow, the angles and the difference between solid and soft.
Sometimes it leaves the artist sitting, paintbrush frozen, simply overwhelmed by the beauty of a material thing.
